LA TRAMA: Alice

Moglie tradita di un uomo d'affari e madre di due bambini scopre il vuoto della propria esistenza, sbanda per un sassofonista e, grazie all'incontro con un saggio agopunturista cinese, è introdotta nel paese delle meraviglie. Pur nella gravità dei temi, è una commedia a corrente alternata con incursioni nel magico (un volo alla Superman, l'apparizione di una Musa, una pozione che rende invisibili e un'altra che innesca l'amore) e un'insolita vena di misticismo che passa per Madre Teresa di Calcutta e approda a un finale quasi costernante nel suo moralismo.

LA TRAMA LUNGA: Alice

Alice è sposata da sedici anni con Doug Tate, un ricco uomo d'affari, e conduce una vita molto agiata. La donna è turbata dall'attrazione che prova per un uomo che ha intravisto accompagnando i figli a scuola. Recatasi dal dottor Yang, un agopuntore di Chinatown, per farsi curare il mal di schiena, Alice viene ipnotizzata e rivela i suoi turbamenti aI medico. Il giorno dopo, si reca a scuola e fa conoscenza con l'uomo. Si chiama Joe ed è un sassofonista jazz. I due si piacciono e si danno appuntamento allo zoo, ma Alice è improvvisamente intimidita. Il dottor Yang le prescrive delle erbe che la rendono invisibile. Alice segue Joe e lo sorprende mentre sta amoreggiando con la ex-moglie. Alice non riesce a trovare conforto e prende delle altre erbe. Nella notte, le compare il fantasma di Ed, il suo ex-fidanzato tragicamente scomparso molti anni prima. Insieme volano sui grattacieli di New York. Dopo qualche tentennamento, Alice si concede a Joe e fa provare anche a lui le erbe che rendono invisibili. In questo modo, la donna scopre che il marito la tradisce. Decide di lasciarlo, ma Joe le confessa di voler tornare dalla moglie. Delusa, si rivolge a Yang, ma inutilmente. Finisce per cambiare vita: si trasferisce in periferia e si dedica all'assistenza sociale e all'educazione dei figli.

Film in qualche modo zoppicante e imperfetto, Alice, con tutti i suoi difetti resta pur sempre un'eccezione in un cinema sempre più vitalistico e rumoroso e avventurato.
